We listened to Ch. 11 of Astrophysics for Young People while we drove to the Finnegan's "farm" for a field trip. It was mostly talking about what Earth would look like to aliens. Interesting ideas.
We spent the rest of the morning doing "Math on the Farm" (Bente's idea). We split the kids into three groups by ability, then came up with fun math projects for them. Bente had Seth's group, and they measured and installed plywood on an alpaca shelter. Melissa had Elise and Elijah, and they focused on counting and forming numbers. I had Aaron and Catherine's group. We calculated how many months the ponies would be pregnant, plus several problems about alpaca wool. Also calculated pig food for a week and month, plus measured many of each of us would weigh the same as their Great Dane. And, finally, how much paint we'd need to paint their little bridge. At that point the kids were all done and just wanted to play. They fed lots of animals, played in creeks, and enjoyed the sunshine.
We ended up going to Broom's Bloom for lunch. The kids read the magazines Bente gave them for the entire drive, which was fun. Then we ended up playing in the Knoxes' woods for the entire afternoon. Not much of a school-heavy day, but it was 65 degrees and we needed to be outside!
In the evening they all played Minecraft together.
