For our morning reading we got through a bit more Marie Antoinette. At this point they're all very grateful they aren't royals. Too many responsibilities.
For math Seth did Fogstone Island, Catherine did more Khan (she's working really hard to finish and earn some extra screen time). Aaron wanted to play Skyjo but we were interrupted by friends showing up to play.
During our drive to Hendrickson's for Fun Friday we listened to Esperanza Rising. Seth hates it. He keeps calling it "that depressing book." But they're all enthralled. We discussed Esperanza's statement about classes being separated by a river and why it offended Miguel.
At Hendrickson's we celebrated National Nacho Day by learning the history of nachos, eating some nachos, and doing some pepper tasting. Tessa taught them about the Scoville Scale and had 6 different types of peppers, ranging from bell pepper to habanero, for them to try. Seth would only try the poblano, but Aaron tried a habanero! So did a few of the other kids. I was quite impressed.
Tessa also set up an obstacle course for them to run through in her yard. Seth and Catherine both gave it a shot. I was impressed with Seth's skills, especially considering he hasn't played soccer in years.
The kids spent the rest of the time playing in the woods behind their house. I found an osage orange and brought it back for them to investigate. Gabe called them 'monkey brains', which is actually what some people call them according to Wikipedia! The kids found a whole stash of them in the woods and were using them in some sort of civilization game (there were elders, sacred places, and sacrifices of monkey brains). They found the remains of some old stone building in the woods and we were speculating about what it was originally used for. Seemed too small for a house and I didn't see a chimney.
Later that afternoon the Knox boys came over and they had a great time playing in the backyard. There were some soldier training sessions, some exploration, and some mining in the woods behind the house.
That evening we all watched the Mandalorian together.
