Thursday 2-25-2021

Another beautiful day, so we were able to read Little House in the Big Woods outside. The kids skated and sledded on frozen snow in the neighbor's yard while I read. They were all terrified of the part where the boy stepped on the yellow jacket nest and was stung all over his body. But they also thought he deserved it.

More Khan today! Seth finished his, so he's a free man until March (so all of one day). Catherine and Aaron both worked super hard. I think they're at 37-38%. Catherine ended in tears after wearing her brain out, but she did it! I'm guessing there will be some Saturday school happening in order to get done.

I also did some Reading Eggs with Elise. She's doing great with her numbers, but for some reason letters just aren't sticking. I need to make sure I'm taking time to sit next to her while she works. Sigh.

We also pulled out the microscope and had the kids bring in a drop of melted snow water from the back porch. They were shocked at all the bits of stuff they found in it! Nothing alive (which is what I was hoping for), but it is a bit cold outside. Catherine also spent some time looking at carrot skin and being grossed out.

At lunch we watched Extra History on the Zulu kingdom, as well as a Ted Ed about animal farts (which my kids loved, sigh). And a Mark Rober about a hot tub filled with sand, which was very cool.

Seth watched a video on Van Leeuwenhoek and learned that human poop is about 25% living bacteria once you remove all the water. Gross. Also a video on what music can do for the brain, which was really fascinating. Apparently music engages the ENTIRE brain, which is why it can help with studying and therapy. He's also been doing his Spanish, which is (hopefully) getting better. We started back all over at the beginning of conjugations to give him a more solid foundation.

There's been much perler beading happening, plus some window hanging art. We've also re-instituted family walks in the afternoon now that Jon's foot is better.
