10-30-20 & 10-31-20

For math we discussed a trick or treating math problem: would you rather be paid to take a sibling trick-or-treating for $1 per house for 4 hours, or just a base $75 for 4 hours? We talked about the various scenarios in which one would be better than the other and why.

Our Friday Fun was a bit short because it was 45 degrees and windy. Very cold. We put Skittles in water, bleach, vinegar, and muriatic acid and hypothesized about what would happen. We also tried to break a pumpkin by putting rubber bands around it. The kids gave up quickly because of how cold it was, so it was a failure. We also made film canister ghosts using Alka Seltzer and water. This was a HUGE hit. We used up all 300 or so tablets I bought. They experimented by putting various numbers of tablets in their canisters, various amounts of water, and finally by putting a bunch of tablets in a juice bottle filled with water. It ended up bursting a hole in the side from the pressure, which they thought was pretty amazing.

Because of Covid, we were much more relaxed about Halloween this year. We kept it very simple with mostly homemade costumes. Other than Elise, they all mostly designed their own costumes. Seth helped Aaron figure out how to make his costume, and I helped Catherine get hers put together. They were all quite pleased.

During a long and eventually failed attempt to attend a trunk or treat, we listened to Echo while we waited in traffic. Later we came home and watched Hocus Pocus together.

Saturday was mostly Dia de Muertos preparation. Catherine and Elise helped cut out a bunch of tissue paper into papel picado. Catherine also helped me make sugar skulls to decorate. All the kids found photos and objects of their ancestors to put on our ofrenda.

When our friends came, we talked about the ofrenda and all the items on it and what they represented. Then we each shared our ancestor stories, which was a lot of fun! We ended the night by watching Coco together.
