We finished Nzingha and spent some time discussing slavery and the Portuguese. Also talked about how the country of Angola got its name (from Ngola). Catherine wondered why some slaves chose to jump off ships and drown rather than live as slaves, so we talked about what life was like for slaves.
For math I worked with Aaron on growing patterns. It took him a while but he got the idea. I gave Catherine a project from Youcubed (penny project). It involved division, multiplication, and some critical thinking. She didn’t quite finish today, but will tomorrow. I was impressed with her ability to keep trying. Aaron watched a video on how steel is made and Catherine worked on her list of chocolates for her survey.
Today was Seth day. He showed me his Roblox games (Tiny Tanks & Bloxy Battles) and explained the code. He says his new goal is figuring out how to get the tanks to move. We also worked on some Spanish, -er verbs. He’s working on keeping the conjugations for usted/ustedes straight. Khan for math. He also started his writing class with Anna Knox & Gabe. He’s very excited about it. They’ll be meeting twice a week and he’ll need to write every day.
The kids all participated in Poetry Time at the Knoxes. They each shared a poem they’d chosen and read it aloud. Then they spent a couple of hours playing in the woods together.
